Medical Clinic & Physician Residence • Designed 1999
Designed for Sunhouse Canada Building Systems Ltd., this concept explored an innovative approach to healthcare construction by combining a modern medical clinic with a private physician's residence in a single integrated facility. The project was developed as part of an initiative to introduce North American platform-frame construction methods to Japan through prefabricated building systems manufactured in Canada and shipped overseas for assembly.
The four-story design carefully separates public medical services from private residential living while maintaining a cohesive architectural expression. The lower levels accommodate patient reception, examination rooms, rehabilitation spaces, consultation offices, and administrative functions, while the upper floors provide a spacious family residence complete with living areas, library, office, fitness room, and traditional Japanese bathing facilities. This thoughtful arrangement allowed the physician to live and work within a single purpose-built environment while preserving privacy for both family and patients.
Developed as an international feasibility study, the proposal demonstrates Lex George's ability to integrate complex building programs, cultural considerations, and innovative construction systems into a unified architectural solution. Although the project remained unbuilt, it highlights his experience working on international commissions and designing buildings that respond to both local traditions and modern healthcare needs.
