Salem, Massachusetts
Originally constructed in 1832, this historic church in downtown Salem was transformed into a collection of seventeen distinctive live/work condominiums while preserving the character and craftsmanship of one of the city's landmark masonry buildings.
Working with Winter Street Architects, Lex George served as Project Manager throughout the design-build process, coordinating the complex conversion of the historic structure into modern residential spaces. The design carefully retained original architectural elements—including exposed brick walls, heavy timber framing, soaring ceilings, and historic window openings—while introducing contemporary loft-style interiors with open floor plans and mezzanine living spaces.
The project balanced historic preservation with modern functionality, creating unique residences that celebrate the building's nineteenth-century heritage while meeting today's standards for urban living. The adaptive reuse approach allowed the church to continue serving the community in a new capacity, preserving an important piece of Salem's architectural history.
